VAT, WITH THE RESPONSIBILITIES CLEAR

One EU audience.
Different tax situations.

There is no single EU VAT rate. The buyer’s location, what you sell, your registrations and the type of customer matter.

01

Set up your business correctly.

Connect Stripe, activate Stripe Tax and configure the registrations and tax settings that apply to your business. GoCushy calculates against that setup when tax collection is enabled.

02

Let the purchase carry the right details.

The checkout collects buyer country and applicable business tax details. For qualifying sales, Stripe Tax can calculate VAT or identify reverse charge.

03

Verify a business-only sale.

For the EU business-only setting, GoCushy checks the VAT number through VIES and requires Stripe to confirm reverse charge. If verification is unavailable, that purchase is blocked for retry.

04

Keep records. Complete your returns.

Review the order and invoice, then use your accounting process for returns and remittance. GoCushy does not register you for VAT or OSS, monitor your registration thresholds, or file and pay your tax returns.

Know the scope before you launch.

Tax calculation requires your connected Stripe account even when Airwallex or PayPal takes the payment. Regional tax controls and sequential invoice numbering require the Worldwide Tax & Affiliates Pack, included with the paid monthly plan. Current post-purchase upsell tax support is Stripe-only. Review your product’s tax treatment and test the complete purchase flow.

CURRENCY IS A CHOICE, NOT A LOCATION

Sell in EUR.
Or the currency that fits.

The European Union includes countries using different currencies. Your tax home, product price and processor settlement do not have to share one currency.

YOUR PRODUCT

Choose its base currency.

Create an offer in EUR or another supported product currency. The checkout and order identify the currency explicitly. Choosing EUR does not set a VAT rate or a tax registration.

YOUR BUYER

Offer a currency choice where supported.

Eligible Airwallex checkouts can show a Pay in menu when enabled on an active paid connection. The buyer chooses; it is not automatic geolocation. Trial and cart checkouts keep their base currency.

YOUR ACCOUNTS

Keep totals meaningful.

GoCushy reports currencies separately. Your processor decides supported settlement currencies, exchange rates and fees. GoCushy’s global subscription pricing is in USD, separate from what you charge your buyers.

Understand currency and settlement ↗

YOUR PAYMENT ACCOUNT. A CLEAR RECORD.

A sale you can
follow to its source.

Connect your own Stripe, Airwallex or PayPal account, subject to provider and plan availability. In transaction details, open the recorded payment in its provider or copy the reference for investigation.

GoCushy operates the checkout. Your payment provider handles processing, settlement and payouts. Your business remains the seller.

BEFORE YOUR FIRST SALE

A few practical questions.

Does GoCushy handle OSS for me?

No. The One Stop Shop can simplify reporting eligible cross-border consumer sales, but your business must determine eligibility, register and submit the returns. GoCushy’s tax calculation is a separate part of that process. Read the European Commission’s OSS guidance.

Does every sale below €10,000 avoid destination VAT?

No. The €10,000 rule has specific conditions for certain intra-EU sales, including where the supplier is established. It is not a general exemption for every seller or service, and it does not generally apply to suppliers established outside the EU. Confirm your treatment before selling. See the official conditions.

Is any valid VAT number enough for reverse charge?

No. Whether reverse charge applies depends on the transaction, including whether it is cross-border. In business-only mode, a valid VIES result alone is insufficient: Stripe must also confirm reverse charge. Domestic business sales can still carry VAT.

Can a New Zealand business sell to EU customers?

Yes, subject to payment-provider eligibility and the seller’s enabled markets. Eligible exports may be zero-rated for NZ GST while EU VAT obligations still apply. Enable international sales and review both jurisdictions. Explore the NZ setup.

Does this cover every EU legal requirement?

No. VAT calculation is not a complete compliance service. Your terms, consumer rights, privacy practices, local invoicing requirements and any national electronic-invoicing obligations need their own review. Start with our EU buyer-rights guide and the requirements that apply to your business.
